This Week's Spotlight: Kabul - Islamic Relief for AfghanistanDONATE HERETHE CAUSE
More than a year now since tumultuous political change in Afghanistan, the Afghan crisis continues to be one of the biggest humanitarian crises our world has faced. Conflict, violence, chronic poverty, coupled with natural disasters have forced more than 6 million people to be displaced, both within Afghanistan and in other countries. Women and young girls are among those most affected.
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck in June 2022 in the southeast region of Afghanistan, the deadliest in two decades. It was estimated that more than 362,000 people were impacted, 40% of which are children.
In addition, approximately ten thousand homes were destroyed, and infrastructure including roads and power supplies were also severely damaged. The most affected areas are often the remote ones, making it difficult for responders. Islamic Relief teams and donors helped survivors by providing shelter, food aid, cash assistance for emergency supplies, and more.
THE ORGANIZATION
After political change in Afghanistan threw families into turmoil one year ago, Islamic Relief made a commitment of $2.1 million to help both families across Afghanistan and the 83,000 refugees who arrived to the US.
Together, with our regional offices in Kabul, Balkh, Herat, and Nangarhar, we continue to work to help provide those in need with the following:
Food packages including staple items like flour, rice, oil, and sugar
Essential non-food items such as hygiene kits, household items, and clothing
Emergency equipment such as family-sized tents
We also teamed up with our partner network to help our new Afghan neighbors transition into their new homes through the following:
Greeting orientations, transportation from the airport, and interpreters upon arrival
Cash, rental, and legal assistance
Hygiene kits and clothing
Food boxes including items like flour, rice, oil, sugar, lentils, beans, salt, and green tea
Mental health and psychosocial support
Medical case management
